世界でただ１つの四角形でない国旗として有名です。三角形を縦に２つつなげた形は、ヒマラヤ山脈を表すとも、ヒンズー教と仏教を表すとも言われています。上に描かれている白の三日月は王家のシンボルで、下に描かれた太陽は、20世紀半ばまで政権を担っていたラナ家のシンボルであるとも説明されています。国王の直接統治から共和制に移行して以後、国旗のデザイン変更を論じる声も出ています。
かつてのネパール国旗には顔が描かれていましたが、1962年12月16日に新憲法が制定されたときに無くなりました。
ムスタン王国の旗
ムスタン王国とは、ネパール内にあった自治王国です。2008年に宗主国ネパールが共和国になったとき消失しました。ずっと鎖国状態だったので、ネパール及びチベットの伝統文化が色濃く残っている地域です。
