The flag is often call the "Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth" or the "Blue Sky, White Sun Flag". It was designed by Sun Yatsen in 1914, when he was seeking asylum in Tokyo. The blue sky represents justice, the white sun, friendship, and the 12 streaks of light from the sun, the 12 shichen and thus eternity. It also expresses the proactive enthusiasm of the citizens. The current flag was made official when Taiwan unified as one in 1928 (the Republic of China).
