The current flag is modeled on what the two Heads of State designed based on New Zealand's flag in 1948, during the New Zealand colonial rule. The five stars in the upper left represents the Southern Cross, which symbolizes the southern hemisphere. A star was added to the original four in the following year. The white star represents the purity of citizens, red, courage, and blue, the Pacific Ocean and freedom.
