The flag with Southern Cross four stars depicted on the Blue Ensign has been used from 1869, during the British colonial rule. The royal blue base represents the blue sea and clear sky that surround New Zealand, and the Southern Cross expresses how the nation is located on the Pacific Ocean. Normally the Souther Cross is composed of five stars, including the small star, but with this flag, the stars have been abridged to four.
