The design depicts a yellow line in the center of a blue base, and the blue color represents the Pacific Ocean while the yellow line expresses the equator. The white star in the lower left represents that the Nauru national land is located immediately south of the equator. 12 streaks of light is depicted from the star and express the unity of the 12 Polenian and Micronesian tribes that live on the islands. The flag was first displayed in 1968, on the day of independence.
