During the Soviet Union days, a white and green horizontal bands were designed on the federal red flag. That design is reflected in the current flag, which was instituted in 1992 after independence. Though a red, white, and green horizontally divided flag, the white in the center is 1.5 times wider than than the red and green portions. Green represents the green plains that are valued in the mountainous nation, white, cotton, which is one of the main produce, and red, national unity and friendship with other countries. In the center is the yellow crown and seven stars, which are depicted in the national emblem as well.
