Moldova has had close ties with Rumania historically , and the flag is alike the three colored Rumanian flag, except for the addition of the national emblem. The national emblem designed with an eagle holding a cross in its beak is also very similar to that of Rumania, but in the center of the shield is a design from the heraldic emblem of the Modavian Principality in the Middle Ages.
