While many of the CIS nations selected design differing from that of the Soviet Union after independence, Belarus' flag is based on the former Sovient Union flag, but without the design of the communist symbol the sickle, hammer, and the star emblem. Red represents the glorious past, and green, the bright future. The red patterns of the white band on the left is a pattern from traditional textiles.
