The national flag was established a year after the Serbia Montenegro federation came to being in 2003. After separationa and independence, it is still used as Montenegro's national flag. Derived from the red flag used in battle with the Ottoman Empire, it has a red base trimmed in yellow, and the national emblem is depicted in the center. The national emblem is derived from the heraldic emblem of the modern Montenegro Kingdom and is based on the double-headed eagle, which is the symbol of East Roman Empire.
