The colors red and white are the colors of the Grimaldi Family which has been ruling for over 700 years. In the 14th century, the base of today's flag is said to have been made, and was made official in 1881. The Indonesian flag established in 1945 was the same design, and although Monaco protested, after mutual discussions since, both decided to leave their flags as is, since they both represented tradition and history.
