Location of AlbaniaA design with a double-headed black eagle on a red base. It is said that this eagle was designed as a heraldic symbol by the folk hero Skanderbeg in the 15th century. Legend goes that Albanians are the descendents of eagles, and Skanderbeg, who successfully defended the country from the Ottoman Empire's invasion, used the eagle as his own symbol. The current flag was made official immediately after democratization in 1992.
