From early 20th century, a more modern flag was thought to be necessary, and the design has changed a number of times from 1903. The current flag was chosen when the country gained independence in 1965. The new moon and green symbolizes Islam, and the green also represents the palm trees that cover the islands. Red expresses blood shed during the battles for independence. Meanwhile, the Maldvies has a President flag, on which a white star is depicted next to the new moon.
