At the time of independence in 1962, ideas of design was publicly called for and selected. Red represents Trinidad Tobago best and symbolizes the nation and the citizens' vitality, the warmth and energy of the sun, and the courage and friendship of the citizens. White is the color of the sea which has fostered tradition and represents purity and equality. Black represents strength and unity, determination, the nation's wealth, and the devotion of the people who are connected by a strong sense of unity.
