Location of SurinamThe current flag was made official at the time of independence in 1975. Before independence, depicted were five stars that represented diverse ethnicity of Indian, Indonesian, African, and Chinese groups. The current flag has one star in the center and symbolizes the unity amoung ethnic groups and the bright future of the nation. The green stripe above and below represent rich crops, white, justice and freedom, red, advancement, independence, and love.
