The flag which was made official in 1844 is based on the design by the founding father Juan Pablo Duarte. In the center is the national emblem, bay laurel and a palm frond, and the bible and cross, which convey that the nation is a Christian one. The red, blue, and white colors are based on the Tricolor of France, the former colonial power. White represents faith in Christ, blue, hope for peace, and red, blood shed in war.
