Although many designs were proposed, the design which is based on the American star flag was officialized in 1817, before independence. White represents the snow in the Andes, red, blood shed for independence, blue, the Pacific Ocean or the sky, and the white star, unity in the nation. In addition, the star is a symbol of national unity, honor and advancement.
