In 1999, some changes were made to the flag at the time and hence formed the current flag. It is based on the flag that was used since 1831 when under the control of the Ottoman Empire. The design is modelled on the new moon and star design, which symbolizes Islam, of the Ottoman Empire's national flag. Since the flag is based on the Ottoman/Turkish flag, it is very similar to the "New Moon Flag".
