The flag is based on that of the Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Principe/Social Democratic Party, which led the independence movement and the administration afterward. Green represents forest resources and agricultural produce like cacao, yellow, underground resources, red, blood shed for independence, black, African pride, and the two stars, the islands that constitute the nation. The current flag which uses African colors was established in 1975 at the time of independence.
