Flag of Vatican City

The Vatican flag is designed to be a square. On the right side is depicted main parts of the national emblem, crossing gold and silver keys and the crown. This key is a symbol of the successor of St. Peter, Christ's apostle. The crown is called "three layered crown" and symbolizes the power of the Pope. The current flag was officialized in 1825, but with independence in 1929, it was again declared official alongside new sets of laws.
