After independence, a design with a sun that releases 16 streaks of yellow light became the national flag. Called the "Vergina Sun", it was the symbol of ancient Macedonia. Vergina was a small town in central area of the Macedonia region in Greece. The Greek government was against having the "Vergina Sun" as the national flag, and was changed to a sun releasing eight streaks of light.
