Green represents the Celtic culture, Catholicism, essences of Ireland's old culture, orange represents new cultural essences such as the Protestant Church, and white, the reinforcement of both. The vertically divided design is from the influence during the 19th century of the the three colored French flag and established itself as the symbol of independence movements. In the past, a flag that depicted the Irish symbol, a yellow Irish herb, was used.
