As the ethnic consciousness heightened in the 19th century, awareness increased for the colors red and silver (white), used in the heraldic emblems of the Bohemian Kingdom, which prospered during the Middle Ages. A bi-colored flag with horizontally divided white and red was used when Czechoslovakia was established, but since it was the same as Poland, blue, which symbolizes Slovakia and Moravia was added in 1920. White, red, and blue are three colors that represents Slavic democracy as well.
