The flag was horizontally divided into blue, yellow, and red when it was said to be based on the flag used during the Brabant revolution in 1789 in rebellion to the Austrian Hapsburg family. After independence in 1831, the current vertically divided flag was made official. The three colors are derived from the black heraldic emblem of Province of Brabant, a yellow lion with red tongue and nails.
Derived from the "yellow lion showing a red tongue on a black base" design associated to the House of Brabant emblem |
