Turkey has used a red color based flag from more than 700 years ago. Flags similar to the current version, with a red base and new moon and star, have been used from the mid 19th century in Ottoman Empire days. The new moon and star symbolizes Islam, but Turkey did not necessarily use the moon and star because of those reasons. Rather, since the Ottoman Empire began using the new moon and star, the two became known to be symbols of Islam.
