In 1830, two years after gaining full independence in 1828, the current flag was officialized. The design is similar to that of the supporting country Argentina and said to be based on it. The yellow sun on the upper left is called "Sun of May" alike Argentina's flag. The nine white and blue stripes represent the nine provinces that existed at the time of independence. White represents peace, and blue, freedom.
