The green base symbolizes the rich nature, red, blood shed by those who won over independence, black, the skin color of the citizens, and orange, copper and other rich mineral resources. The flag uses African colors, but the design is a unique one. In the upper left is the eagle which represents freedom and progress and is a national bird that is depicted in the national emblem as well. The current flag was made official in 1964 at the time of independence.
