The current flag was established when the nation gained independence from the French colonial Sudan in 1960. Based on the French Tricolor, it is a vertically striped design with the African colors of green, yellow, and red. The flag is also called the flag of "African Democratic Assembly" which led the nation toward independence. Green is often said to represent the nature and agriculture, the yellow, gold and underground resources and wealth, and red, blood shed for independence.
