The current flag was established alongside the Malawi independence on July 6th 1964, but President Bingu wa Mutharika changed the design to the red, black, and green stripes with a white sun on July 29th 2010. Then in May 2012, the old design revived. Black represents the citizens, red, the blood shed during the independence war, green, the luscious national land. The red sun in the upper portion expresses hope and start of freedom in the African continent.
