The current flag is based on the flag of Kenyan African National Union. Black represents Kenyan pride for black skin and symbolizes the Kenyan "people". Red represents "blood" shed to win independence and white, "peace". The design in the center is said to express pride for the Kenyan army having won independence with spears and shields. The current flag was established in 1963, at the time of independence.
