The flag uses the three African colors and is derived from the flag of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde. Normally the three colors express blood shood for independence with red, the underground natural resources or sun with its yellow, and agricultural produce or hope with the green. However, in Ginea Bissau, it is said that red represents the coastal regions where the capital is located, yellow, the northern Savanna regions, and green, the southern forest regions. The black star conveys the location of the capital city, Bissau.
