The horizontally divided flag uses the African colors of red, yellow, and green and is based on the flag of the former colonial power France. Red represents blood shed for independence, yellow, the underground natural resources and the sun, and green, the agricultural produce and hope. Also, the three colors expresses the nation's slogan "work, justice, unity". The flag was made official in 1958 at the time of independence.
