The flag was originally made official in 1957, and although it was altered when the administration changed, it was reinstituted in 1966. Red represents blood shed for independence, yellow, mineral and other underground resources, and green, the luscious plantation of the tropics. The black star is the symbol of the anti-colonial African independence and freedom and is said to be "the black star of hope and honor".
