The green, yellow, and red horizontally divided flag was created in 1897, and has been used since, apart from the Italian colonial ages. The current flag was made official in 1996, the year after the Federal Democratic Republic was established. In the center is depicted the national emblem, which is based on the heraldic emblem of Solomon. The star symbolizes that all Ethiopians are equal, despite any difference in tribe, religion, or gender.
