The current flag which was made official at the time of independence in 1975 is a red and black horizontally divided flag with a yellow wheel, chopper and star designed in the center. Red represents blood shed during the independence war, black, the African continent, and yellow, the wealth of the nation. The wheel symbolizes the workers and industrial production, the hatchet, farmers, agricultural production, and military battle, and the stars, international unity and profression. The star originally symbolized socialism, but Angola ended socialism in 1990.
