The flag is called the "Red Dragan" in Welsh ("Y Ddraig Goch"). On top of the white and green two colors is the "red dragan", the symbol of Wales. The accurate depiction of the dragan has not been specified. The flag was instituted in 1595 as the national flag of Wales. The base colors green and white are also the colors of leeks (Western long onion), which is another symbol of Wales.
