The flag was made official in July 1997, when Hong Kong was returned from Britain to China. In the center is designed the flower petal of bauhinia. Red represents the Chinese socialism, and white, capitalism and together they represents the two systems in Hong Kong. The five red stars in the flower petals allude to the Chinese "Five-star Red Flag" and expresses unity as a Chinese compatriot.
