England is one of four federal nations that constitute Britain - North Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland. The flag with its red cross on a white base is often called the cross of St. George. St. George is said to be the patron saint of England from about the 13th century. The red cross has been used from the Crusades and was the initial heraldic emblem symbolizing England.
