The red cross on the red base is based on the proposal of TupouⅠ, who unified Tonga in 1862. The cross is the symbol of Christianity, and it is said that the red color represents Christ's blood shed. It was designed by Prince Uelingatoni Ngu Tupoumalohi and Shirley Baker, who was a Methodist priest and the king's advisory and later prime minister.
