It is said that it was based on the flag used in Schwyz Canton, designed with a white cross on a red base. It was acknowledged as the national flag in the 19th century, and until then, all cantons had respective flags. The original model of the current flag appeared in the first half of the 19th century but was officialized as the national flag in 1889. Like the Vatican flag, the Swiss flag is square shaped.
