During the Danish period of rule, the Danish flag was used, but after being brought under the control of Sweden in 1821, the current flag was made official by the Norwegian Parliament. It is based on the the Danish flag's design, layering a blue cross on a white one. As in the tricolor of France, the red, white and blue colors express the desire for freedom.
