Before the independence in 2008, the interim government sought for national flag and emblem ideas publicly, with one condition requiring the use of traditional colors. A 1000 submissions were made, and the current design is based on one of them. A golden shape of the nation is depicted on a blue base, and six stars are in line above it. The six stars symbolize the Albanian, Serbian, Turkish, Bosnian, Romani, and Gorani ethnic groups.
