This Scandinavian flag with light blue on a white base was established after gaining independence in 1918. The white and light blue colors came to be used from Sakarai Topelius' phrase, the famous Finnish poet, author, and writer of children's literature, "The blueness of our nation's lakes and whiteness of the snow". Finland also has a governmental flag with the national emblem drawn where the light blue cross crosses.
