Numerous flags have been historically used in Bosnia. When the civil war which started in 1992 came to a close, there was a need to establish a new flag that avoided any colors of ethnic groups. Many ideas were considered, but in the end, inspired by the EU flag, a unique design with blue and yellow tones and stars. The inverted triangle in yellow represents the shape of the national land and expresses hopes for reconciliation among the three ethnic groups.
