Divided into three horizontal parts of red, white, and black, it is said to have been influenced by the Egyptian flag. In the past, North Yemen and South Yemen flags both used stars, but when they integrated into one in 1990, the simple three-colored design that symbolizes Pan-Arab values was chosen. In Yemen, red normally represents blood and integration of martyrs, white, the bright future, and black, the the dark past.
