The shape of the Cyprus Island is depicted in copper color on the white base. The copper color shows that Cyprus has been a production area for copper from old days. Below that is the olive branch design, which symbolizes the ideal shape of friendship and unity among Greek and Turkish ethnic groups. When the flag was made official in 1960, the Greek flag's blue and the Turkish flag's red were deliberately avoided.
