The flag was made official with independence gained in 1974. Yellow symbolizes the sun and friendship among the residents, green, the rich vegetation and agriculture, red, the courage and vitality of the Granadians. The small yellow design in the left corner are nutmegs, which are important agricultural commodities for Grenada, which is sometimes called the Island of Spices. The seven stars in the center and in the top and bottom represent the seven regions in the nation.
