Blue represents the sky and sea, and white, peace. In the center is the national emblem. The triangular national emblem symbolizes equality under law, and in the triangle is depicted the Phrygian Cap which is the symbol of war for independence and expresses freedom. The rainbow above the Phrygian Cap represents peace. The flag was made official in 1972, from historical reasons, the five countries of Federal Republic of Central America uses similar designs for their flags.
