The flag was designed by the Dominican playwright Alwin Bully and made official in 1978. In the center is depicted the national bird parakeet, and the surrounding ten stars represent the ten districts. The red circle represents independence and socialism and green, the national land. The yellow, black, and white lines resemble the cross and represents The Holy Trinity (God, Christ, Holy Ghost) in Christianity.
